What Is Eco Cleaning?

Green or eco cleaning refers to being environmentally conscious while cleaning. This can mean using different methods to clean or by not relying on products which are harsh to the environment; the health of humans or the natural world.

Cleaning your home does not mean you need to disinfect with harmful chemicals. There are some environmentally friendly ways you can approach your household cleaning which will be good for both your health and the environment.

Eco friendly cleaning ideas:

• Lose paper towels and begin repurposing old cloth (socks, tshirts etc) as cleaning rags.
• Use a dustpan where possible instead of the Vacuum.
• Wash dishes/surfaces with green cleaning products or; go natural with lemons or vinegar.
• Cut down on tumble dryer use by drying laundry outside or on an airer near a window.
• Ditch conventional cleaning products and experiment with natural anti fungal oils such as eucalyptus, tea tree and citronella.
• Find friendly cleaning products, for these; a quick google search or review page can inspire you!

Much of what you will find online to inspire your eco cleaning has a definitive nod to the past, sometimes the old ways really are the best!

A lot of modern life has become convenience but cleaning chemicals, while faster are destroying our natural environment at a time when many of us are trying to be careful of our carbon footprint.

Though you may wash your clothes at 30 degrees to save the environment, you may find if you overload it or use a gel cleaner your clothes don’t appear to be clean.

Make sure you are regularly wiping the lip of the door and interior regularly with one of your repurposed cloths! To keep your machine clean, rather than using chemicals-do a hot wash with only washing powder once every 3-6 months depending on your usage.

For built up areas of dust on carpets, instead of keeping your vacuum on for ages and not getting anywhere, buy a squeegee and simply scrape it across the affected areas.

Many of the eco cleaning hacks you find online will be at a minimal cost and require minimum effort. You can get your kids involved too by making cutting up socks to repurpose a craft activity.

Modern life has made a lot of us lazy but with a little thought and effort we can all leave a better world for future generations.
