The New Year is the perfect time for a clear out, start the year fresh and declutter, follow these tips and you will be happy and clear in not time.

Pace yourself & be Realistic – first of all make sure and set yourself enough time, you probably won’t get your whole house decluttered within a couple of hours. The same as you won’t be able or willing to get rid of everything, so don’t feel bad if there are some things you just can’t let go of.

Find the treasures among the trash – I love going through old keep sakes, photographs, CD’s the little things that I have kept over the years, so you should enjoy going through those and allow yourself some time to reflect on it, you may even want to have a shope box or two handy so you can combine them all in one place.

Update Your Technology – Transfer CDs and DVDs to a hard drive, I mean when was the last time you actually watched them? And do they have any sentimental value? You can then cash in and send them away to a buying site. Replace kitchen gadgets with one that combines the work of several, or update the larger items to ones which take up less space and don’t be afraid to throw away those cables you have no idea what they are for.

Give Away Some Items – We have all said that phrase, “it’s a shame to throw it away” yes it may be but when was the last time you used it? Then why not make yourself feel better and give something back, donate items which someone else could make use of to charity.

Try the Oprah Winfrey Closet Hanger Experiment – While this idea didn’t originate with Oprah, she was the one to help give it notoriety. To identify wardrobe pieces to clear out, hang all your clothes with the hangers in the reverse direction. After you wear an item, return it to the closet with the hanger facing the correct direction. After six months, you’ll have a clear picture of which clothes you can easily discard. This experiment could also be applied to a number of clutter areas in your home (cleaners, toys, linens, tools, hobbies and craft items).

Make A List & Keep Track – Make a list of the areas you want to declutter and tick them off as you go, that way you can keep track of what’s been done and what’s left, giving a sense of achievement as you go.

Take the 12-12-12 Challenge – A simple task of locating 12 items to throw away, 12 items to donate, and 12 items to be returned to their proper home can be a really fun and exciting way to quickly organize 36 things in your house. On more than one occasion, this challenge actually became a quick competition between my wife and me… and your kids don’t have to be too old to participate as well.

Use your imagination – its recommends to use your imagination to help declutter objects that may seem difficult to remove. Try asking yourself unique questions like, “If I was just buying this now, how much would I pay?” These creative techniques may prove to be very helpful for some with difficulties removing unneeded clutter.

Imagine you have guests coming – When we have guests coming we all have those items which we like to hide, throw in a cupboard, identify those items and ask yourself if they really have a place in your home if your ashamed of them?

Create Kitchen Cupboard space – We all have those one or two kitchen cupboards which are over flowing and everything falls out when we open them, so why not put your fancy pots & pans on display, I like to see a trio tower of stainless steel pots and they take up so much room in a  cupboard.

Have a Place for everything – whether it’s the bathroom, entrance hall or your bedroom, make   a place for everything, hooks for your coats, a box to sit your hairdryer in, it’s all still there but it’s tidy!

Follow these simple tips and you will open your home up, it will brighter and cleaner, giving you a better outlook and one less thing to worry about.
